Leaving New York

My essay with Luca Messarra is out in American Literary History:

Erik Fredner and Luca Messarra. “Leaving New York: The Dispersion of Twentieth-Century US Literary Publishing.” American Literary History 38, no. 4 (2026): 386–413. https://doi.org/10.1093/alh/ajag058

Using Library of Congress records, we show that New York City was the place of publication for most US literature only between 1947 and 1963. After that, publishing grew faster everywhere else. We then discuss the material changes that made this happen.
